I was born in Toronto, and my wonderful parents and twin sister live in Nova Scotia. I just finished two and a bit years teaching in Taipei, Taiwan, and I needed a break. At this very moment, I can be found exploring the wonders of Australia. Or maybe just serving coffee in Perth. Here are some pictures, thoughts and stories for friends and family to keep track of my life. .
All is well in Taiwan. Julia and I are having a great time revisiting favourite spots, and I'm happy to spend my days at school. The spring weather is perfect right now, making Taipei look very appealing, indeed. Yesterday I met with Marvin and his mother (my old tutoring family), and tonight we're finally getting together with Kathleen B. (the other roommate: KN, KB, Julia and Louise). It's hard to believe I'm leaving tomorrow night, although staying longer would probably just make it harder to leave. I planned this trip back as a final goodbye to Taiwan, and I expected the stress, weather and culture to remind me why I left. The opposite has happened, everything seems great, and I'm feeling just as sad to leave as when I left the first time. Especially seeing my old students and remembering how meaningful it is to be a teacher. For example, Julia and I were taking the bus the other day when two girls stood up and asked if we would like to sit down. Then they asked, "Are you Nickle?" They used to be students at Fuhsing, and were in Carole's class three years ago. They were twins too (one was named Serena, Carole, do you remember?) We had a nice chat, and after we got off the bus, I couldn't help but think what a privilege it is to work with these kids knowing that you can make such an impact on their lives. On a lighter note, Julia has a great MacBook, with a very entertaining photobooth application. Here are the results: But it took us a while to figure out the movie option. Here is our first attempt...
